In 1996 a comprehensive Traffic Study of Faisalabad was carried out. Traffic situation was
extremely dis-satisfactory. Deteriorated Roads were unable to accommodate over whelming
Traffic Volumes. It resulted Traffic jams, accidents and inconvenience for the travelers.
FDA appointed M/S Multi Dimensional Consultants to conduct the Traffic Study in Faisalabad.
The Phase-I of the study included Inception Report, and Data collection, regarding origin and
destination, Roads network, Intra City, Inter City Traffic, Parking etc. The second Phase
includes reports on Land use study, Trip generation, Trip attraction, Model split and Network
Assignment. After data analysis travel demand was forecasted for future requirements. Short
term and long term. Transportation Plan were formulated. Major out comes of the study were as
follows.
-
Out of 26 Traffic Zones, 22 were significantly deficient in Roads.
- A proposed ring Road around the built up area will reduce travel time by 30% to 40%.
- Total length of the major Roads is about 145 KM. Out of which only 15% have foot paths 8% have
median and 8% are with service Roads.
- The comparison of traffic flows at 60 points in the Road network shows that 57% Roads have
flows between 1000 to 3000 PCU’s per hour, 31% between 3001 to 6000, and 12% between 6001
to 8000.
- It was observed that 70% to 80% parking requirement is for short term i.e. less than one
hour.
- The total parking supply is 7159 spaces whereas the demand is 7609 spaces.
- Various transportation projects high lighted were as under:-
- Central area Traffic Management Schemes.
- Link Monitoring Programme of all major Roads.
- Traffic testing Programme by Police and TEPB.
